Think about the first picture you look at after you wake up …

Is it on your phone?  Beside your bed?  On your bedroom wall?

I can guarantee it is the first one you see because you intentionally put it there, maybe even without realizing it.

One of the first ones I see as I walk to the coffee maker every morning (so, first thing …) is a “Family Rules” wooden sign.  The more I look at it, the more I am reminded of how I want to show up for, and within my family.

Pictures are powerful.

They connect with us emotionally and remind us of people, places, and things that matter to us.

It’s why one of the most expensive photography purchase is a wedding package.  The day you want to remember and capture.

Back to the first picture you see …

What is it of?

Why is that picture special to?

What does it remind you of?

You see, the why of the picture is the power of the picture.

It’s why vision boards work.

Here are five reasons why if you haven’t done a vision board in the last six months you will want to do one soon.

  1.  Vision boards bring clarity to you as you make them.  The process of identifying goals and dreams, looking through magazines for pictures, words, or images that remind you about them, actually brings clarity of what truly matters the most to you.  What resonates to you, will not resonate with others.  As you create, you get clearer on who you want to be and where you want to go.
  2. The creativity brings clarity.   As I was creating my last vision board I came across the words “Three Days”. They seemed to jump out at me and I thought about a special book I had read that encouraged me to break big dreams, hard times, or busy days down into bite size segments, just like how the author had thought of “5 seconds at a time” when he was stranded on a mountain overnight.  When I saw the words I thought, “three days … I can do anything for three days.”  Any of my weight loss goals, business goals, personal development goals could all be accomplished three days at a time.  As you look through the magazines, tear out the pages, cut out the pictures, and glue them on your board you discover clarity.
  3. Quotes and words remind you of how you want to show up in your life.  Some of my favourite words or phrases are, “Posture of Presence”, “Lean In”, and “Redefining the Possible”.  This year I want to be present wherever I am, I want to lean in and be intentional and I want to realize that what I thought was possible is so much bigger now.  When I sit at my desk and look at these words every day they become “who I am” more than “who I want to be” because I unconsciously start stepping into them.  They were words that caught my eye as I looked through the magazines, words that resonated with me, or phrases that reminded me of things I wanted to remember.
  4.  Pictures connect with your emotions.  Vision boards are powerful because the why behind what you put on your board connects with your emotions and adds value and urgency to following through on what you identify as important.  Your why helps you step forward because you know the reason it matters.  When you hang your board somewhere you will see it every day, your emotions work behind the scenes connecting with your why, and I promise, you will look back in about six months and say, “I did it!  Wow!  I didn’t think I could!”.   You took the steps because you knew why you wanted to.
  5. Vision Boards are personal.  Every vision board I have seen has been specific to the individual making it in a powerful way.  Whether it was a 10 year old figure skater creating life goals, or an empty nester creating how she wanted to show up in her new season of life and goals she wanted to step into that she had been putting aside for so many years, each vision board is unique.  My favourite part of a vision board workshop is when women share their finished boards with one another at the end of the evening.  Gives me goosebumps, and if I am honest a few tears every time.

What would you put on your vision board?

Where would you hang it?

What if you could create your own vision board overlooking a golf course as the sun went down, with friends or family, while enjoying a glass of wine and appetizers?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter what the atmosphere is because once you get into the pictures and cutting them out your vision board comes to life, but the scenery and treats sure makes the evening that much more fun and memorable!  A great evening to do with friends or family, even a spouse.
